Burlesque Art Show

Burlesque Life Drawing Comes to Norfolk

When many artists think "life drawing," they think of sterile rooms, bad lighting, and bored, silent, models with nary a hint of personality.  Dr. Sketchy's
Anti Art School is here to change all that.

Dr. Sketchy's
Anti-Art School is the little New York art event that became a movement.  Started in 2005 by artist and burlesque dancer Molly Crabapple, the concept is simple.  Artist's draw glamorous burlesque dancers, compete in contests, and win wacky prizes. From it's humble Brooklyn beginnings, Dr. Sketchy's now has 16 branches around the globe, including Hollywood, London, Berlin, Edinburgh, and Melbourne.

It's also spawned a companion book, Dr. Sketchy's Official Rainy Day Colouring Book, by Crabapple and John Leavitt, published by Sepulculture Books.  This coloring book is one part saucy activity book, one part DIY handbook, and one part history of Dr. Sketchy's first year.  The Village Voice calls it "a hipster's wet dream", while
New York's L Magazine praises it's "jovial yet biting Neo-Victorian wit."

Molly Crabapple's book tour is taking her to
Richmond.  She'll be reading from her book at music Mecca Relative Theory Records, then hosting a mini-Dr. Sketchy's, where a costumed model will pose for the crayon-armed attendees, with the best drawing winning a free book.  The model, incidentally, is former teen Virginian Pilot columnist Jennifer Dziura (currently a stunning NYC comedienne), who will pose in a very skimpy wonder woman costume.

Since it's inception in '05, Dr. Sketchy's has received coverage from the likes of The LA Times,
Time Out NY, The Village Voice, WNBC, and The New Yorker.

Dr. Sketchy's happens on Friday, March 2nd,
6:30-8:30 pm, at Relative Theory Records, 271 Granby St, Suite 200
